The advice of our friends, mentors and loved ones is like a map through a mine field, clearly showing the location of the mines that have been stepped on by those who went before us. Sadly, most of us have the tendency to take the map and fold it up into a nice hat (or a brooch or a pterodactyl) and march right off and step on the exact same mines.
